There are about 25 accredited dental hygiene schools in Texas, so it is useful to know something about what to look for in a school before choosing one.  Typically, these programs are geared toward an associate of science or an associate of applied science degree.

Such a program tends to last less than two years, but this can depend upon many factors.  Still, many schools have similar prerequisites and teach their students the necessary skills needed to succeed in the field.

 

Looking at one of the schools like Amarillo College can give an idea of what one can expect with these schools.  Students in dental hygiene associate of applied science degree program are required to take 72 semester hours of coursework and clinical work.  They are expected to maintain a “C” average in all courses.  Tuition varies for residents and non-residents with residents paying $36 per semester hour, $54 per hour and $90 for two hours while non-residents pay $76 per hour and a minimum of $209 for three hours.  Of course, there are also fees.

 

There are other dental hygiene schools in Texas like Del Mar College that can give a good idea of what students can expect to learn.  For instance, students learn to work with advanced periodontal therapy, dental sealants, dental x-rays, oral prophylaxis and giving instruction to patients on oral health and controlling oral diseases.  Afterwards, they should be prepared for licensure exams at the clinical regional, state and national levels.

 

Looking at a school like Lamar Institute of Technology can help prospective students know what they need to do in order to get into dental hygiene school in the first place since it is possible to be waitlisted for many programs.  LIT students are encouraged to complete supporting courses before they apply to the dental program.  At LIT, those who complete Human Anatomy and Physiology I and Human Anatomy and Physiology II are given preference over other students.

 

There are also other dental hygiene schools in Texas such as Austin Community College, Baylor-Caruth School of Dental Hygiene, Colin College, Howard College, Texas State Technical College, Texas Women’s University and Wharton County Junior College among others.  They may have similar requirements such as students maintaining a “C” average and even prerequisites such as required courses taken before enrolling in the program.  Still, each school has its own unique style but adequately prepares students for the field.
